WHAT IS CONSTRUCTION GEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION?
Construction geological investigation is the use of specialized drilling machines in geological investigation (XY-100, HT-150E drill,…) to drill deep into the ground to accurately determine the soil layers below.
During the drilling process, combined with soil sampling, for every 2 meters of drilling depth, a carefully packaged soil sample will be taken to bring to the laboratory for physical and mechanical properties of the soil. Soil mechanical testing in the laboratory is carried out according to Vietnamese standards (current TCVN), in addition, British standards (TCBS) and American standards (ASTM) can also be applied.
In addition, the drilling process also incorporates field SPT testing (Standard Penetration Test).
In some cases, the field testing process will include the following additional tests:
- Wing want shear test in medium soft, soft and very soft clay.
- Dynamic penetration testing combined with measuring CPTu pore water pressure
- Experiment measuring soil resistance in boreholes

WHICH PROJECTS NEED GEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION?
Construction geological investigation is carried out in the ground area of the projects about to be built. The following projects require drilling for geological investigation:
Residential housing:
Civil housing (residential houses) with floor area > 250m2 or 3 floors or more – according to Circular No. 39/2009 TT-BXD, geological survey drilling is required before construction
Factory:
For factories in industrial zones, a geological survey report is required in the application for construction permit
Note: The investor must request permission from the Industrial Park Management Board before drilling for geological investigation
Depending on the regulations of each industrial park, the Factory Investor may have to pay an advance guarantee to the Industrial Park Management Board and will be paid back when the geological survey drilling unit completes the field work
High-rise buildings and apartments:
(required in the application for construction permit and data required for foundation design, there will be additional tests in addition to the 9 physical and mechanical criteria such as triaxial tests UU, CU, CD, compression tests a side expansion shaft, compression consolidation test, concrete corrosion water sample test)
School:
All school items must be drilled for geological investigation before construction, regardless of high-rise or low-rise buildings
Each school unit needs to drill 3 boreholes, the depth of each borehole is from 20-40m depending on the geology of the school construction area
Hospital:
Classified by category of geological investigation drilling such as office area, medical examination and treatment area, emergency recovery area, post-operative high-rise building area, etc.
For each item, there will be at least 3 geological investigation boreholes, the depth depends on the number of floors of each item and the geology of the area
For low-rise areas (2-3 floors), you only need to drill about 20-30m deep, so that the field SPT index is > 15 at a depth of 5m
For high-rise areas (>5 floors), apply the same as drilling for high-frequency buildings
Traffic road:
Drilling geological investigation along existing roads that are about to be renovated or have not yet been formed, which can be fields or ponds, drilling depth ranges from 5m/hole to 30m/hole depending on the type of road and the density of vehicles on the road. , distance from 500m to 1,000m per borehole
There are also a number of other construction items that require geological survey drilling such as: Swimming pool, port, military warehouse, gymnasium, …
